Mixtape Monday: Ash Walker Premiere, Thee Mike B, SBTRKT & More!
Welcome to yet another Mixtape Monday, where we dedicate some of our primeest web real estate to bring you the best damn mixes on the internet or otherwise. This week comes packing an extra-progressive grip of sets, including the world premiere of Deep Heads records signee Ash Walker's vibrant new hip-hop piece. From there, SBTRKT travels to worlds unknown and Thee Mike B puts his decks to the test. The sun shining's on a brand new week and summer's no quite over, so grab your headphones c'mon; nothing to it, let's get to it.
Soaring off the success of his new Agnostic EP, Ash Walker is one of Deep Heads' most promising new signees and comes armed with both a phenomenal set of pipes and fantastic taste. After notching a number of brilliant remixes and accolades from some of the UK scene's leading tastemakers, Walker has been kind enough to share his brand new mixtape, a forward-leaning blend of modern beatmakers, classic funkateers and instrumental virtuosos. From J Dilla to Nils Frahm, it's nothing but brilliance. Here's what Walker had to say about it all:
"This mix is an insight to my musical influences and inspirations. I’ve been loving KAYTRANADA’s productions, and it’s great to see new artists like BADBADNOTGOOD pushing the envelope of Jazz and be so well received. Cymande are true inspirations to me, they’re 6 incredible musicians that blend together complex rhythms, sophisticated harmonies and improvisations to make up a perfect groove, and ‘Dove’ is a sublime example of this. I’ve included some tracks from undercover musical dons like Nick Hakim and Henry Wu, and some absolute legends like Flying Lotus, J Dilla, Jamie XX and of course the genius composer Nils Frahm – I recently attended his performance at the Proms, it was incredible. The mix is pretty eclectic and jazzy, but tries to keep a thread of low-fi, warm energy so that it flows together as one movement of music."

It gets no doper. The Hundreds and Thee Mike B have linked for a brand new offering. It's pure vintage grooves--we're talking 50s, 60s and 70s cuts from the likes of Santana, James & Bobby Purify, Blood Sweat & Tears and more. A little oldies, but it grooves in an extra-fresh way. Here, we'll let Mike B explain it for himself:
This is the 2nd DJ mix I did for the kings of street wear, The Hundreds (they also host it!) It's a summery mix of low rider classics, as well as lots of other quality music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. It was originally supposed to be a sequel to Drive-By Bangers, but we decided to go non hip-hop. 500 copies floated around the Magic tradeshow in vegas in '07. It remains one of my most well received and sought after projects. Shout out to the epic Steady Dippin' cult crew.
SBTRKT was kind enough to share his recent BBC Radio 1 Residency show with the world, and are we ever thankful. Mobb Deep, Daft Punk, A Tribe Called Quest and five new songs of his own populate the hour-long set, which charts a strong course between hip-hop and the dark, deep-pulsing electro that he himself is known for. Here's hoping we get more BBC-sponsored gems soon.

It's always a great day when a new edition of the Stones Throw podcast gets dropped off in your inbox. The West Coast label brought none other than Breakbeat Lou through for their latest installment, letting him stretch out amongst his 45s and deliver unto us some of the best rare funk and soul to come out of the 20th century. Get your hips ready and pour the wine--this right here is the real, real deal.
Here's one for the 90s kids out there. A live set of Tim Westwood's from the 1996 Notting Hill Carnival has made its way back online thanks to DJ Step One, and amidst all the shouting hooligans and blaring horns, it's easy to make out some of the toughest breaks and golden-era bars to ever get cut to wax. This one's so damn archival it hurts--in a good way. Back then, you used laptops to play SkiFree, and real decks to DJ.

Soul Clap Records' Bosq just this month shared his new EP Tumbalá, a beautiful piece of work that blends Latin grooves together in a way that'll have you thinking the warm, sunny weather will never leave. Sadly, that's not the case, and working with Wax Poetics the DJ/producer has shared a mix tailor-made for the last, long nights of summer. Here's what Bosq had to say about the mix, in conversation with Wax Poetics:
“Trying to capture the feeling of summer in the Northeast is tough. The most concise summation I could muster is, ‘Finally here, it’s almost over,’ because, honestly, that’s how it feels up here. (Not to mention that by the time I finally ever do a summer mix, it tends to be almost over.) That feeling of fleeting warmth and beauty coupled with my city emptying out every summer (byyyye, students!) is what I tried to capture in this mix, and for me, this is what it sounds like inside my head when I step out of the house and start walking on those first warm days. It’s also my attempt to extend the summer feeling a little longer than the weather usually allows us to. It’s a funky little 55-minute trip through some disco, cumbia, funk, Afrobeat, y mas. Enjoy!”
Our man Will Coloan is a gentleman, scholar and expert mixtape-maker. On his latest mix, the NYC-based DJ brings together all sorts of house party anthems, including joints from Marvin Gaye, Alexander O'Neal, Steve Arrington and many more. It's the prime example of the pastel 80s-era coming across as perfect in the modern moment. Press play, enjoy the sunset wherever you are, and keep on moving to it.
