Mixtape Monday: King Britt's 'Random Mix' Exclusive Premiere, Bonobo, House Shoes & More!
Welcome one more to Mixtape Monday, where we serve up the very best in sonic constructions, all collated and collected for your convenience. This week is an extra-special electronic session thanks to the world premiere of DJ King Britt's new set of complete "Random" genius. The dancefloor feel continues through Bonobo's new red-hot two hour set for NTS Radio, and then veers into cool, collected hip-hop territory with brand new work from House Shoes. Toss in a bit of vinyl jazz, some French-inspired R&B and great many more assorted treasures and you've got the perfect kick-off to your week. It may be Monday, but that just means you're done day closer to the weekend already. Begin.
For those of you who missed out on King Britt's brilliant set at the 2015 Roots Picnic, here's your chance to breeze back up to speed. The DJ recently threw down a completely random and unscripted live set at home and kept it all on tape; now, that set is here for your listening pleasure, very proudly presented by Okayplayer. "Sometimes just messing around at home while going through new and old stuff, you find yourself making a ʻrandomʼ mixtape," Britt told OKP. "You listen back and your like ʻdamn Iʼm glad I recorded this one.ʼ This mix is one of those times. No track listing because I did it on the fly but so much heat." So much heat indeed.
If you don't often check in with the worlds of house, electro and downtempo, first of all shame on you. Second, take heart, because Simon Green aka Bonobo has shared a sprawling new mix with NTS Radio, and in it we get a top-notch refresher course in the best beat music going 'round today. Green kicks things off with the latest Thundercat before flowing into the moody guitar of Flako, the lush Jacques Greene remix of Vaults' "Premonitions" and off out into the stratosphere. It's two hours of music made equally for drifting or dancing. Bonobo knows best.

Our own dear friendCosmo Baker has been putting together a series of "best of" mixes, blending together current tracks that fit his funky frame of mind, and now he's reached something of a landmark in the series: 18. His little mix venture is old enough to vote!
Cosmo has always done things his own way, and this is what he had to say about this new groove batch, which features plenty of 80s-tinged funk, uptempo neo-R&B, bedroom grooves and more:
The last thing about these mixes is the way I've traditionally approached them. Unlike a lot of the other mixes that I - or most DJs do - they're not about fancy tricks or wicked blends or any of the bells and whistles. I've always approached these mixes more from a curatorial perspective, and to allow that to reflect in the actual mix itself. Going out and finding new tunes, new tunes that I like and can stand behind, and figuring out a way these all work together in one cohesive mix. The mix is always done bare bones, using nothing but two turntables and a mixer, but the music as a whole speaks a lot more in what it contains than how it's presented. Truth be told in my mind's eye it's a version of me being my own John Peel or Pete Tong.

What better way to ease into the week than a mixtape of nothing but vintage jazz off of 45 rpm vinyl? Trumpeter/arranger Todd Simon shared a brand new mixtape with our friends at WaxPoetics, digging into cuts from Sonny Stitt, Astrud Gilberto, funk brother Jack McDuff, superfunk brother Grover Washinton Jr, and whole host of other highly-samplable cuts. But the thing is, jazz this great should just be left to luxuriate in its original form.

Every one of their artists is featured on this new introductory mixtape, which pulses and quivers with the sort of neo-progressive-future-beat stuff that always proves so difficult to name but so delightful to listen to.
