Mixtape Mondays: Four Tet, Eavesdrop Radio, Electrafrique, Hindi Horrorcore + More
This week's Mixtape Monday is an international affair. We kick off our excursion in the UK with Four Tet AKA Kieran Hebden for a new DJ mix. Then we jet over to Nairobi for the homie DJ Cortega's Electrafrique Nairobi Mix, then to Mumbai (or at least Brick Lane) for a mix of so-called "Hindi Horrorcore" assembled by Andy Votel of the Finders Keepers reissue label). We end up 360 degrees back home to Philly for an installment of Eavesdrop Radio courtesy of DJ Junior and our friends at Record Breakin--but not before a quick eurailpass to Belgium for the latest show from LeftO, who's mixes are included in this column so regularly I'm almost embarrassed to put him in the headline now! All in all you should be good for the week, mixtape-wise. So get to streaming:
A new Four Tet mix always has to get a mention and this new upload--titled: 1234567890qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm (DJ mix JAN 2014)--from the DOOM and Neneh Cherry collaborator is no exception. Hebden goes deep into soulful house territory and beyond, incorporating squelchier 'lectronics, spacy neo-dub, breakbeats, the occasional baroque piano interlude and more in arun of tracks that all work as a club set but otherwise are hard to sum up with a micro-genre or category.
This excellent DJ Cortega mix which sonically connects East Africa to Afro-Colombian sounds comes to us courtesy of (duh) Okayafrica, who sponsor the global DJ residency called Electrafrique. Here's what OKA had to say about this Jan '14 installment:
It’s been just over a week since our New York friends first tasted the hot and heavy sounds of Electrafrique. If you missed out, fear not, Electrafrique mastermind DJ Cortega has delivered a brand new offering to tie us over. Recorded live at Nairobi’s first Electrafrique of the new year, Cortega’s latest has extra Afro-Colombian seasonings c/o of a budding friendship with Quantic. Play on and download below. And make sure to be on the look out for NYC’s Electrafrique party series the second Saturday of every month (more on the February 8th edition to come soon).
This mixtape of rare and retro Bollywood grooves--as a bit of a filmi fanatic myself Hindi Horrorcore is probably a bit of a misnomer; there are certainly ghost stories in the history of Bollywood but real horror flicks are a pretty recent development, much after the 60s and 70s heyday of many of these rare soundtrack selections from playback geniuses like R. D. Burman and Asha Bhosle--comes from collector/label head Andy Votel, via FACT mag. Still this collection of spooky South asian soul and thriller/suspense movie grooves will not disappoint. Least disappointed will be those searching for sample-able gold (read this first though--and remember India produces some of the most-heard, most-licensed soundtracks in the world).
The homie DJ Junior from Record Breakin walks us uptown with a selection of exactly that shit we do like, including a grip of wax-only Record Store Day releases, thoughtfully encoded here for the vinyl impaired. You can't just have 'em, though...you have to dive through a clear pool of FlyLo, Nina Simone, Disclosure, Hugh Masekela x Metro Area, Sade, Sango, I,Ced, DJ Rashad...oh hell, just listen, you get the idea.
