Mixtape Mondays: Jill Scott, New Ta-Ku, The Heatwave + More
Mixtape Mondays has arrived yet again to kick your week off with the freshest beats around. To wit, kindred soldier DJ Rahdu drops Honey Molasses, his Jill Scott flips and remixes project and while our eyes were watching Texas our boy J. Period dropped the final chapter in his trilogy of Notorious B.I.G. tribute mixtapes, #MARCH9REVISITED. If that ain't enough, we have Ta-Ku delivering part III of his Drive Slow, Homie collection, The Heatwave collective sharing new dancehall tracks, Jasmine Solano x MeLo-X stirring up reggae and electro jams as Electric Punanny. LeftO returns, Aloha Got Soul x Weekends West soothe your winter-scarredsoul with local Hawaiian grooves, and Shem of Blackmale Beats soundtracks Fashion Africa (passed to us by the ladies of Les Nubians--beaucoups respects!). Click through to please your ears and your soul.
Ta-Ku is one of our favorite beatmakers and his Drive Slow, Homie series has become sort of a mixtape institution already. We 've been waiting for anxiously to see if there was indeed a part 3 on the way and now that it's not here, it does not disappoint. From B.Lewis to the Biebs--with space for Pharcyde refixes in between--there's not a wrong note on here, even if we are riding the slow subway while we listen instead of pushing the requisite Delorean.

The homie DJ Rahdu delivers another in Bama Love Soul's excellent series of Flips, Covers & Remixes, mostly dedicated to the Soulquarians we heart best. The newest Okayplayer to get the Bama-Love-Soulquarian treatment is Miss Jill Scott. With the aptly named Honey Molasses. If you like songs about food and sex or just soulful music, this is probably the mix for you. Here's what BLS had to say about it:
Jill Scott made a comment during her performance on VH-1's Storytellers about her music selection process that stuck with me. She said that even without her, the music has to have a story of its own for her to write to it. Apparently she picks them well; Jill has the uncanny ability to connect to numerous demographics, an uncommon skill in todays stratified musical climate. I've heard some joke that Jill's songs are about either food or sex, and yet others that say Jill speaks to and for them. Honey Molasses is a compilation of the artists that feel that Jill's songs could somehow help tell their story. Thanks to DJ Rahdu for selecting and mixing them for our listening pleasure. Welcome to the soundtrack of Spring!

Our fellow music snobs at Wax Poetics put us up on this mellow tropical gem comprising all-Hawaiian soul selections. The perfect tiki cocktail to take you away from the arctic east coast and/or put the lime in the coconut of your SXSW hangover:
This blend of Native Tonguery and eclectic nu-African jams selected by Blackmale Beats comes to us via the ladies of Les Nubians. A nice balance of new and old, Afro and Afrocentric, it puts us more in the mood of a stylish café in the 18th arrondissement than an afropolitan rave-up in Jozi. But that's cool, too.
