Mixtape Mondays: DJ StarEyes x Bounce Ballroom, The Bullitts, Ghostface Killah + More
This Thursday May 1st, marks the official start of Spring and the kick off of Red Bull Music Academy here in New York with the Bounce Ballroom dance-stravaganza. To kick it off properly this week's edition of Mixtape Mondays features an OKP exclusive mix crafted for RBMA'S Bounce Ballroom by DJ Star Eyes, of Brooklyn's Trouble & Bass crew, running down the anthems of the various foot styles (Flexing/Bruk Up; Voguing; House Dancing and Jersey Club) on display. Mixtape Mondays is the best of the best though so we also have a playlist from The Bullitts, a new Nas tribute mix, the fourth installment of Record Breakin's Sound Traveler series with a mix by Spinnerty, Trackstar's compilation of Ghostface Killah's best storytelling moments (yes, it is titled Ghost Stories), another gem from Spöek Mathombo--this time featuring South African Rap--and wrapping things up is our boy LeFtO. Get full details for Bounce Ballroom via the flyer below and click through to stream another continent-skipping, mind-shattering-body-groovin collection of music for Mixtape Mondays.
DJ/producer Star Eyes is part of the NYC-based Trouble & Bass squad, who have been transmitting Brooklyn's heavy bass sounds to the world for the last 8 years. Star Eyes joins us on Mixtape Mondays today in her capacity as curator of Bounce Ballroom, the inaugural event or Red Bull Music Academy's Spring '14 music festival here in NY. Bounce Ballroom is an event featuring four club dance styles—and the music associated with them—that are native to the New York/New Jersey Area each presided over by DJs and dancers who are kings in their respective jungle (dancehall expert Bobby Konders for Flexing/Bruk Up; DJ MikeQ, MC Kevin JZ and Prodigy for Vogue; NY house legend Todd Terry for House Dancing; and DJ Sliink and Mike Gip for Jersey Club).
For maximum edification while you flex, we asked Star Eyes to create an original mix exploring the common threads that run through the 4 distinct styles as well as curate a playlist of the essential anthems. This mix starts with deep house then goes to ballroom house (the music of the vogue movement), Jersey Club, and into the final section for flexing or bonebreaking, a New York spin on a Jamaican dancehall dance that is typically performed to a mix of dubstep, trap, and wild reggae refixes from bedroom producers from Bed-Stuy to Queens. Listen to both below and read what Star Eyes had to say about her selective process below:
It's a mistake to think these worlds are separate. The work of artists like Brooklyn's Todd Terry and Kenny Dope, the Bronx's Lil Louie Vega (half of Masters at Work, with Kenny), and NJ's Kerri Chandler in the 80s and 90s continues to have a huge influence today, trickling down from parents and older brothers and sisters and seeping into new productions throughout the Tristate Area. This isn't the definite mix of any of these styles, of course, but I wanted to present some of my favorite tracks from some important producers and a selection of producers and tracks you will hear at the Bounce Ballroom event on May 1. I think its exciting how all these genres continue to talk to one another—for example, 20-year-old Jersey Club DJ Mike Gip remixing Cajmere's "Brighter Days" (an important house track) or ballroom's MikeQ working Jersey club DJ Sliink. Now get your heart rate up.

The redoubtable Chairman Mao comes through with his latest for RBMA radio, a little podcast called, Super Soul Power Ballads Power Hour II. Which kind of says it all. Listen below:
Spotify playlists usually don't qualify as mixtapes but selections from the mind of Jeymes Samuel AKA The Bullitts are an exception. We're alway interested to hear what the evil genius behind the Great Gatsby soundtrack, not to mention his own film They Die By Dawn is listening to when he's not inspiring Jay Electronica to jump back in the studio or staging guerilla cinema actions on the streets of London with Rosario Dawson. He's listening to a lot of folk music, turns out which suits our mood just fine. This FULL CLIPS playlist, however, is only the first in a series The Bullitts will be unveiling over time, presumably as audio clues for the next big project he's working. Listen below and stay tuned for more (The Bullitts debut album "They Die By Dawn & Other Short Stories" is out now)
THE BULLITTS present FULL CLIPS: Volume One.
DJ Spinnerty of Grown Kids Radio teams with the homies at Record Breakin' for the latest installment of their Sound Traveler mix series. Beats ahoy:

It's called Ghost Stories and that's what you need to know about it except for these instructions: If you a good kid...Run!
The anniversary of Nas' Illmatic has result in a grip of amazing tribute mixes (not to mentiona an %844 spike in sales for Nas) and Solid Steel connects us with another, courtesy of DJ Moneyshot. Here's what they said:
Twenty years ago Nas released his legendary Illmatic album and DJ Moneyshot has put together an outstanding tribute mix, Nas – Half-Man Half-Amazing. As with the previous tribute mixes for the Beastie Boys, De La Soul and Public Enemy, it’s more an audio documentary threading together sample sources, interview footage and remixes alongside the original Illmatic tracks. Hear the vocabulary, the flow and the rhythm expertly delivered by Nas, backed up by the sublime production of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor and Q-Tip, plus original samples from Lee Erwin, The Heath Brothers, Ahmad Jamal and Reuben Wilson. All this deconstructed and rebuilt by Moneyshot for another classic Solid Steel edition.
