Unsealed Murder Case Docs Reveal New Details in Nipsey Hussle Shooting

Grand jury trial transcripts lay out new information regarding the timeline of the rapper's tragic death.

On March 31, Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in front of his Marathon clothing store in Los Angeles. The rapper, philanthropist, and entrepreneur was 33 years old.

A 29-year-old man named Eric Holder was later arrested in connection with Nipsey’s death and the injury of two other men. Holder pled not guilty to the six-count indictment, including one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder, and faces life in jail if convicted. He appeared before a grand jury where the district attorney’s office presented evidence against him in the shooting.

Last week, The Los Angeles Times posted three volumes of transcripts from the grand jury trial. This week, Vulturereported on the 515-page transcript, which reveals new details and revelatory information about the case.

Much of the case rests on the testimony of a woman (Witness 1) who told police she was casually dating Holder and drove with him to Slauson and Crenshaw, the location of a strip mall containing Nipsey's businesses on the day of the shooting. She claimed she did not believe Holder knew he was going to see Hussle. She took a picture with Nipsey and claimed to hear Holder ask Hussle "if he had ever snitched.”

Other witnesses say Nipsey gave Holder big brotherly advice on rumors that he'd snitched. Accounts of the conversation vary, but according to Vulture, by all accounts, the conversation never became heated. Witness 1 says Nipsey ended up waving Holder away dismissively before he left the parking lot and pulled out a semi-automatic handgun.

Witness 1 said Holder allegedly instructed her to a parking lot and told her to wait as he left the car. She heard gunshots, but claimed she wasn't sure what was going on. Holder then returned and ordered her to drive, allegedly threatening to slap her if she did not comply. She says he stayed with her at her mother's residence.  Witness 1 went on to testify that Holder refused to discuss the gunshots.

The grand jury hearing also included testimony from witnesses Kerry Lathan, a former Rollin' 60s Crip who was injured in the shooting and Herman Douglas, who does multiple jobs for Nipsey’s businesses and who was present for Nipsey’s conversation with Holder at the scene of the shooting.

Lathan told authorities Nipsey’s last words were directed to the shooter: “You got me."
