The age-old Chinese philosophy of feng shui is all about harmony and arrangement. It’s also the perfect title for the smooth, well-tuned track that Brooklyn's Nitty Scott, MC just bestowed upon us.
Produced by Ski Beatz (you just might be familiar with his work on Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt), the keys, live drums, horns and deftly funky bass work are off-the-hook slick and Nitty's cooled-out verses fit the vibe bespoke. Easy, breezy, beautiful.
The cut is the second single off Nitty's upcoming record The Art of Chill. We can't not point out the lyrical nod to Frank Ocean--this sound hits a bullseye between "Sweet Life" and the jazzed-out stylistics of Reachin (A New Refutation of Time and Space). Those Pretty Purdie hi-hats and auto-wah bass fills are on point, giving us confidence that The Art of Chill will live up to its name when it drops on May 23rd.
Last month we were treated to "Apex," a collaboration with Black Hippy soldier Ab-Soul, but now with "Feng Shui" it's clear Nitty's got more than enough bars to handle a track completely unassisted. Nitty recently posted some mighty zen lines about the joint on her tumblr page:
I will surrender my ego and simply be, knowing that I can never cease to be, because life, death, time and space are only an illusion. A matrix. I can transcend my own thoughts, even transcend this worldly realm, and I know it now. I am grateful to the Universe, for I have found my Art of Chill.
Feng shui roughly translates to "wind-water" and these airy sonic waves oughtta be the perfect addition to your "holiday weekend." This one's for the park, the lounge, the bathtub, the bedroom and the beach. Summer's almost here: time to relax, update those playlists, harmonize your life and get everything in its right place.
