Oddisee Shares Deeply Emotive New Single "Belong To The World"

Oddisee: The Okayplayer Interview

The multi-talented Washington D.C. native known as Oddisee is once again forcing the music world into a standstill. As a producer with a knack for rhyming eloquently over his own beats, Oddisee isn't really an exception--there are plenty others who can mix and spit well. It's the way in which he does it, the abundant emotion that goes in to every measure, that sets his music apart and makes each release essential listening for hip-hop and R&B fans everywhere. Right now the do-everything musician is gearing up for the May 5th release of his newest LP The Good Fight, and has decided to treat us to another sampling of what's to come. "Belong to the World" tells the story of Oddisee walking alone through crowded cities and apartment parties, searching for a way to feel connected to the din of everyday life. Pianos and drums twist beautifully to form the beat, but it's unquestionably the rhymes that matter most on this new single. "I'm just trying to break out the mold / Trying to do the opposite of everything that I'm told," Oddisee asserts.

But "Belong to the World" doesn't idealize isolation--it strives to connect. By making plain his struggle against going with the flow, Oddisee is holding out a hand to anyone who's felt a little too weird or thoughtful to fit in. Listening to it alongside last week's "CounterClockwise" release, it's clear that this new album is meant to offer solace and solidarity to outsiders all over. Listen to "Belong to the World" below, check out Oddisee's current tour schedule, and pre-order The Good Fight on iTunes today.
