Officer Who Killed Rayshard Brooks Faces 11 Charges Including Felony Murder
Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by former Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe.
Former Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe, has been charged for fatally shooting Rayshard Brooks.
In a report from CBS News, Fulton County D.A. Paul Howard announced that Rolfe faced 11 charges, including felony murder. Per CBS News:
Howard, speaking to reporters Wednesday, said Brooks never displayed any "aggressive behavior" toward the officers during the nearly 42-minute exchange with officers. Howard said the officers failed to provide "timely" medical attention to Brooks after he was shot.
Devin Brosnan, the second officer who was present when Brooks was killed, faces three charges, including aggravated assault for standing or stepping on Brooks' shoulder after he was shot. Howard added that Brosnan is willing to become a witness for the state and testify against Rolfe.
The altercation occurred on Friday night (June 12), when police were called to a Wendy’s where Brooks was found asleep behind the wheel of his car while parked in the drive-thru lane. Officials claim Brooks failed a sobriety test and resisted arrest, grabbing Rolfe's taser during a skirmish before giving chase. Security footage shows Brooks pointing the taser at Rolfe before being shot in the parking lot.
Following the shooting, Atlanta police chief Erika Shieldsresigned, and claimed that she was stepping down “out of a deep and abiding love for this city and this department" to “build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve," in a statement.
