World Premiere: PBS Beat Making Lab In Fiji [Episode 2 — Trapped in Paradise]
Last week, we premiered the first glimpse at PBS' Beat Making Lab adventures in Fiji. Today, we've got the next installment for your daily dose of uplifting stories of hip-hop bringing people together. As Dave, who is studying at the Fiji Beat Making Lab and narrates this episode, describes: "Fiji is very rich in culture, because we're not rich in many other things," and the dudes in the video clearly have a lot of raw material to work with. They combine traditional Fijian sounds with what they've learned under the tutelage of beatheads Apple Juice Kid and Pierce Freelon and come out with some really inspired tracks. In this episode, they describe their earlier challenges with getting the Fiji hip-hop scene off the ground (never really expected I'd type that particular combination of words) since they had little access to production equipment and their excitement about being able to bring it all together now. With new work on incorporating samples and more experience sitting in a room with a bunch of other producers, the guys working out of Fiji's Beat Making Lab are sure to come up with more interesting music. Check out the second episode below and click through the link for the first look. Be sure to stay tuned for the next few chapters in the coming weeks for even more.
