Pharrell Says A New N.E.R.D Album Will Arrive 'When It's Time'
Looks like Pharrell Williams is bringing back his band N.E.R.D for a new album.
Yesterday, Pharrell (alongside HBO music executive Scott Vener) hosted a live broadcasting of their Beats 1 Radio show #OTHERTone during #ComplexCon in Long Beach, with Snoop Dogg serving as a special guest.
Following the discussion with Snoop, Pharrell took to the audience to answer questions. After being asked of the existence of a fifth N.E.R.D album Pharrell responded favorably, stating "The answer is yes. When it's time."
Inevitably, no other details were offered after the announcement, but it is exciting to hear that new N.E.R.D material will see the light of day in the foreseeable future.
Composed of Pharrell, Chad Hugo and Shae Haley, N.E.R.D popped up as a side project of The Neptunes back in 1999. They released their debut album In Search Of... back in 2001 (the following year marked the re-release of the album with a live backing band, courtesy of Spymob), with their last album being 2010's Nothing.
Throughout the years Pharrell has offered small but assuring responses in regards to new N.E.R.D material. When a fan asked him about it during an iHeartRadio Twitter Q&A back in September 2015, he responded "Of course!"
A year before that the band reunited for a set of songs for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, creating "Squeeze Me," "Patrick Star" and "Sandy Squirrel" for the film.
So, what would an N.E.R.D album sound like now? That's difficult to say. But if Pharrell and company decide to feature some guests on the album they definitely have a lot of artists to choose from.
From big time fan Tyler The Creator to some of the artists on his I Am Other label, the possibilities are endless. Hopefully more news will be unveiled about the project soon, but at the very least we will be able to hear some new stuff from Pharrell courtesy of his role as composer for the film Hidden Figures.
