Phony PPL Put One Up For MJ w/ A Swinging Cover Of "You Rock My World"
[Artwork by Bari Bass]
Those of us that have indulged in the eclectic music menagerie that is Phony PPL's live show have come to know and love their set as a compendium of left-leaning r&b and hip-hop. And while crowd favorites from their recently released (and critically adored) Yesterday's Tomorrow LP tend to get all of the shine, their cover game is just as on point. Today, the Brooklyn-based crew has let loose a studio version of their genre-blurring take on Michael Jackson's late-career smash "You Rock My World." It takes the thick r&b chops of MJ's cut and siphons it through a dancehall/reggaeton prism, utilizing bossa instrumentation akin to the afro-latin syncopation of his Off The Wall classic "Wanna Be Starting Something" (heavily inspired by Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa.") That may be a bit much to digest, but it'll all fall in line once you put your ears to this sambaton swing. Listen to Phony PPL's take on Michael Jackson's "You Rock My World" below and peep their upcoming dates to experience the goods live and direct.
