Y'all may remember the redoubtable Liv Warfield--the voice and fierce spirit of many a jam from The New Power Generation, the band formed to back up the one and only Prince--from this double single (is that a paradox?) for "Catch Me If You Can" and "Why Do You Lie?" I posted a month or so back. Today OKP is proud to premiere this clip of the first of those two heavy songs performed in a live acoustic session captured on the roof of the Bossert Hotel here in Brooklyn as part of the BKLYN AIR series. If I may quote myself:
“Catch Me If You Can”...comes on like a pre-dawn raid, combining doorknocker drums, a big brass section and deceptively precise jazz harmonies on the hook. “
...so it's something of a revelation to witness Liv capture that tempo and intensity with nothing but some handclaps and some skiffle-like acoustic guitar work to hold down her brilliant vocal. The raw talent on display here triggers automatic ideation of what she can do in the studio with, say, a band--never mind if that band was Prince's band. The reality, however, may be even better than the ideation: Liv is currently in the studio finishing her album The Unexpected (due out January 2014) with a few songs written by Prince himself, including the title track. We're also told that Liv will be dropping her first video soon, for the other half of that double single "Why Do you Lie?" Watch below and stay tuned for more fierce things to come soon:
