The Grammy-winning producer speaks out about Queen & Slim not receiving a Golden Globe nomination.
Melina Matsoukas recently opened up about her debut film Queen & Slim not receiving a Golden Globe nomination, she alleges the voters did not attend any screenings of the feature.
According to Variety, on December 9 when she woke up and saw that the movie had not been nominated she wasn't surprised. In fact she had been warned by her team about this possibly happening due to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made up of journalists who vote for the Golden Globe nominations.
The film featuring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Smith finds the duo in a tragic love story. It was written by Emmy Award-winning actress Lena Waithe. The feature has raked in nearly $30 million at the domestic box office.
When speaking on Queen & Slim Matsoukas shared, "We held three screenings for the HFPA and almost no members attended." She went on to share she believes her debut film not being nominated as being reflective of their voting body and not reflective of the society we live in.
Matsoukas also said:
"They don’t value the stories that represent all of us, and those stories are so often disregarded and discredited, as are their filmmakers. It’s extremely discouraging. It’s extremely infuriating. And it just represents an archaic system that is full of people who don’t value us."
The HFPA has disputed the claim that members didn't watch the film. Voters had been sent screeners and could have watch the feature in their homes. In a statement, the organization shared Queen & Slim was "in the conversation amongst the membership."
According to Variety the HFPA has received criticism this week for not nominating any female director or screenwriters for the Golden Globes. In 2019 alone numerous critically acclaimed films could have been nominated including Hustlers (Lorene Scafaria), Harriet (Kasi Lemmons) and Honey Boy (Alma Har’el).
Sources have previously told Variety that Universal Pictures tried to persuade the members of the HFPA into seeing Queen & Slim. After three different screenings only a few voters had attended, a source shares there were four.
