Pass The Popcorn: The Suicide Squad May Be Spawning New Offspring

Suicide Squad doesn't hit theaters until August, but Warner Bros. and DC Comics may already be looking into spinoffs of the film's ensemble of villains.

According to a report from We Got This Covered, the companies are so confident in the film that they are already considering spinoff films for the characters. Suicide Squad will introduce viewers to Task Force X, a collection of super-villains assembled to carry out secret missions for the government. Margot Robbie has already been attached to reports of a film about her character of Harley Quinn, and more are being considered.

“They’re going to do a sequel for sure, and the recently announced spinoff with Margot Robbie has got everyone excited, too, but their plans don’t end there. The studio is feeling very confident in the property. They think it’s going to be a really big hit and they think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters.

I’ve heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up.

Could this mean a new Will Smith film? After all, Smith portrays the super-villain Deadshot in Suicide Squad and after Captain America: Civil War showcased Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) as the film's arguable star--one of three black superheroes in the film, counting War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie)--this could leave the lane open for Will Smith to take on one of his most intriguing roles in years.

Jared Leto is reportedly interested in continuing his role as The Joker for a full film, giving him room to flesh out the most popular villain in comics. Warner Bros. and DC also like Jai Courtney's portrayal of Captain Boomerang.

Stakes for the film would be high, especially after Batman v Superman received such mixed reviews and Captain America: Civil War such critical acclaim. Suicide Squad producers reshot multiple scenes in recent months, reportedly to add a more lighthearted tone to the film after Batman v Superman was panned for being so dark.

Will Suicide Squad breathe new life into the DC universe? Only time will tell, but DC and Warner Brothers are banking on it.
