Revivalist News: Tawiah Interview + Show At SubCulture NYC 6/25

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

British "twisted soul" maven Tawiah has been collaborating with artists like Cee-Lo and Corinne Bailey Rae for some time now, but she's recently been working on solo material (yay!) that you can hear live in New York next week. Her indie sound is equal parts classic R&B and new age influences, reminiscent of an Alice Smith or newcomer Jennah Bell. Of course, if you've been following her on OKP, you knew all that already (but if not, scroll down to familiarize yourself with her video for "TEARdrop"). The musician recently spoke with The Revivalist about her new music, how she almost became a star athlete and the hardest part about being in the music industry:

"When it’s business and you become a product, it’s like what people think you should do. It’s a bit of a mind-fuck. I have to be true to me though—I can’t really be any other artist or sing anybody else’s songs. If people really love music, they sense integrity in the songs and the artists who sing them—I do anyways. It’s just like, “Yeah, you’re doing you.” But I did find that quite challenging, because people are saying, “You’re so versatile; you could do this or you could do that.” It’s a bit of a blessing and a curse. I have to express myself and the people that feel it will feel it. I just have to keep on keeping on."

We hope she does just that. Check out some of her features on Eric Lau's most recent release One of Many and be sure to grab tickets to her show at SubCulture on Tuesday.
