Toro y Moi Remixes Billie Holiday's "My Man"
Chaz Bundick AKA Toro y Moi is at it again with this remix of Billie Holiday's "My Man." Exhibiting Lady Day's distinctive voice, Bundick builds a somewhat spooky vibe at the beginning that releases into a more upbeat middle section before dipping back into a darker sound to lead to the end of the track. A flute-like sound leads you through the song after he drops it about a minute in and left me grooving in my seat through the full (almost) four minutes.
This re-imagined piece comes to you from Verve Records' upcoming release Verve Remixed: The First Ladies. This installment, slated to drop on July 16, will feature mixes of classic jazz women such as Nina Simone, Astrud Gilberto, Sarah Vaughan and even the lesser-known Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Since you don't get much of Holiday's lyrics in Toro's remix (although I'll take the re-worked version), check a live version of the original below if you're not familiar. And if your vocal jazz collection needs a boost, let this tape introduce you to some new sounds from a few favorites. Look for Verve Remixed: The First Ladies to drop next month (Purchase here via Amazon) and check if Chaz will be coming to a city near you on his current tour.
