Amongst his Odd Future cronies, Tyler The Creator has long stood as the crew's most eccentric and deceptively well-versed music fan and student. Anyone who's paid attention to his last two solo records should understand this in spades, as Tyler loudly blossoms into one of the rap-game's unsung production heroes with a thorough understanding of funk, soul and r&b's past and an eye on hip-hop's future. It as precisely this bed of music geek-dom that was on display in another overwhelmingly insightful (and, of course, hilarious) run-in with the R&D king Nardwuar. Their 20-minute romp was characterized by standard gift-giving from the Human Serviette, who relinquished records by Heatwave, Gino Vanelli, Norman Connors and a slew of lesser-knowns that have influenced Tyler, some unbeknownst to him, even getting a personal account of what the mighty, mythical MF DOOM might smell like (spoiler: it's not what you think.) There are mountains of musical nerdiness in these 20-minutes of unconventional Q&A, but I'll be damned if it isn't the best way for a fellow frequency fanatic to wind down their day.
