Rihanna Has Been Dropping Hints for Months That She Named Her Son RZA

The son of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky is named after none other than the Wu-Tang Clan’s de facto leader. On Wednesday night (May 10), the birth certificate of the pair’s son leaked online, showing that his name is RZA Athelston Mayers. The almost one-year-old appears to be named after the legendary RZA, whose legal name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, although he shares the middle name ‘Athelston’ with A$AP Rocky. The birth certificate also confirms Mayers’ birth date of May 13, 2022.

While the revealed name comes as a surprise to Rihanna fans, the nine-time Grammy-winner has been dropping hints about her son’s name, as she’s recently been spotted wearing a Wu-Tang Clan t-shirt. Other pap strolls show the expecting mother rocking a New York Yankees hat (the birthplace of Diggs and The Wu), and she also wore a RZA graphic tee last August.

Baby Mayers’ forename seems to follow family tradition, as Rocky, legal name Rakim Athelaston Mayers, is also named after the self-proclaimed ‘God MC.’ Rocky and Rakim met in 2012 during a chance encounter at Hot 97, when the “D.M.B.” rapper also called his mother on-air.

According to Rocky’s mother, Rakim met an infant Rocky while driving through Harlem, which the 55-year-old later confirmed in a different Hot 97 interview.

"I remember a long time ago, driving through Harlem. A lady walks across the street. I'm at the light, she walks across the street. She got the carriage and everything," he said. "She says can 'you sign this for me?' I never say no. I say 'what's his name?' Rakim. I'm like word? She's like Rakim. I sign the joint, I remember that day, cause that was the first time hearing someone named their son after me. Like I said, humbling experience."

Until now, Rihanna and Rocky have remained mum about their son’s name, only referring to him as ‘baby’ around journalists. The couple is now expecting their second child, which Rihanna revealed during her Super Bowl LVII halftime performance in February.
