Kendrick Lamar' made his sophomore appearance on Saturday Night Live a memorable one, performing his soul-stunting hit "i" and the collaborative blapper "Pay For It" with fellow Top Dawg Jay Rock. NBC's flagship late-night program has been on a bit of a tear as of late, gracing the world with a rare performance from The Purple One and his disciples a few weeks back, and the rap game's microphone maven did not disappoint. With jet-black eyes and a fierce stoicism, K Dot delivered the powerful sermon of self-love and respect in a particularly kinetic showing,even giving us a taste of that square-shouldered shuffle he's been rocking as of late.
On the second run, Jay Rock makes his inaugural appearance on the program, jumping into the big, brooding balladry of "Pay For It", our first live look at Jay's showmanship in some time. And of course it's on-point. It may be safe to say that with all the high-voltage antics, the iconic 30 Rock stage may have seen it's best performance of the year. That's not to throw any shade on the The Kid; even he has tapped into the grizzly torrent of verbal virtuosity that Kendrick's been serving up, having famously invited Lamar to perform with him and 3rdEyeGirl in Paisley Park a few months back.
