Watch Desiigner Freestyle For a Visibly-Confused Funkmaster Flex
The last time Desiigner delivered some semblance of a "freestyle" he unintentionally landed mumble rap poster child status. It spawned "Timmy Turner" and countless arguments that underscored growing concerns of derivation from the "The Golden Age Formula," but mostly just made old heads seem even more detached from the current state of hip-hop than we had already assumed them to be. That's an entirely different piece that requires more than a few hundred words for this writer to vent.
Today, I'd like to focus on the "Panda" rapper's latest attempt at a mean sixteen. Last night Desiigner got in the booth with the most splendiferous mumble rap hater that ever was, Funkmaster Flex; a man that has perhaps been hip-hop's most outspoken critic of the new generations's approach. Flex, who's come after the Lil Rappers of our day on more than one broadcast, gave Desiigner his shot, and for roughly three minutes, stayed mostly out of the picture, as the Bed Stuy native plowed through verbiage a cappella.
Part of me wants to note that Desiigner seems determined to say something with his performance. The other part of me is still trying to figure out precisely what that is. But whether there's real measurable substance here or not, this one's worth watching for Flex's myriad confused facial expressions alone.
