Watch H.E.R. Cover Prince For the Emmys 'In Memoriam' Segment
H.E.R. flexed her chops on the guitar for the performance as well.
The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a bit different than past ceremonies due to the pandemic, but H.E.R. put on a rousing performance for the virtual crowd. On Monday night, she covered Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" for the In Memoriam segment of the broadcast. Stream the full performance below.
The segment honored the legends we've lost in the past twelve months--iconic actor John Witherspoon, Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman and more.
The segment ended with a powerful quote from Boseman. "Purpose crossed disciplines," the late Black Panther star said. "Purpose is an essential element of you. It's the reason you're on the planet at this particular time in history. The struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose."
Prince originally penned and composed "Nothing Compares 2 U" in 1985 for his side project The Family. The song wasn't released as a single, and went largely unnoticed until Irish singer Sinead O'Connor covered the song in 1990 for her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. The track spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, Alternative Songs, and Adult Contemporary charts. The video went on to win three awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards: Video of the Year, Best Female Video, and Best Post-Modern Video. O'Connor was the first female artist to be awarded Video of the Year.
Prince's original recording of the song wasn't released until 2018, when Warner Bros. released it as a single.
