On Sunday, Pence and his wife, Karen, were guests at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, a historically black church in Largo, Maryland, when the church's pastor, Maurice Watson, told his congregation that he felt "led by God" to speak on Trump's offensive comment.
"I stand today as your pastor to vehemently denounce and reject any such characterizations of the nations of Africa and of our brothers and sisters in Haiti," Watson said. "And I further say: Whoever made such a statement, whoever used such a visceral, disrespectful, dehumanizing adjective to characterize the nations of Africa, whoever said it, is wrong. And they ought to be held accountable."
A video of the sermon can be viewed below.
According to a report from WUSA-TV, Pence was "visibly red-faced at times throughout the speech."
Trump has denied describing certain nations as "s**thole countries." After the comment was reported in a story from The Washington Post, Trump tweeted: "The language used by me at the DACA meeting was tough, but this was not the language used. What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!"
Trump was confronted by journalist April Ryan about the comment during an event honoring this past Friday, when the reporter asked him "Mr. President, are you a racist?" Trump ignored Ryan's question and immediately left, ignoring questions from other reporters that were present.
