"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life."

For weeks ahead of the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, the world was left guessing as to who might be tapped for their holy grail Prince tribute. Names were tossed around the ether, Frank Ocean mentioned that he wanted to be the one as he clapped back at the show's producers over the weekend. But it wasn't until last week that we learned Bruno Mars would be the man in the purple suit. And what a treat it was.

With The Time in his back pocket and a spot-on "white cloud" guitar replica in hand, Mars pulled out all the stops, performing the Purple Rain freakout, "Let's Go Crazy," leaving nothing but a deep purple afterglow in their wake. He even proved to be a wildly more proficient guitarist than anyone could have imagined, shredding the final licks of the cut as the performance came to a close. From one pint-sized r&b star to the one that made it possible for a five-foot-nothing multi-hyphenate to get the spotlight, this was a proper salute across the board. Watch Bruno Mars tip his hat to Prince in the clip below.
